Believed to be the earliest of Lloyd’s electronic sculptures, Nubile comprises twelve cylinders stacked in a three-by-four parallelogram. Although Lloyd used this shape as a building block for the shape and size of other sculptures, Nubile is distinct—its cylinders contain three Christmas light bulbs, whereas his subsequent works contain four. Lloyd’s use of three light bulbs, in blue, green, and orange or red, was partially inspired by collaborator Alan Sussman’s work with RCA in developing early analog color televisions.
