One of Lloyd’s more intricately designed sculptures, Moussakoo is made up of four identical hexagonal components, which can be installed in any configuration as long as one side of each component touches another. It is also among the last known light-programmed works that Lloyd made before shifting his focus to activism and the formation of the Store Front Museum in Jamaica, Queens, in 1971. Before entering the Studio Museum’s collection in 1996, three out of the four original motors belonging to Moussakoo were lost, so the pattern seen here is an interpretation of the sculpture’s original programming.
